Is Eyebrow Threading Painful?

Eyebrow threading is an ancient hair removal technique that uses cotton thread to remove unwanted hair to shape your brows. The thread is twisted around the Brow Artist’s fingers and pulled along areas of unwanted hair in order to grab the brow hairs directly from the root of the follicle. This method is completely natural and chemical-free. So, does it hurt? Yes and no. With any hair-removal technique, there will always be some level of discomfort. Threading, however, is the least painful. This is because the hair is removed directly from the root. If you’ve ever tweezed your brows, you can compare the feeling of threading to plucking five hairs at once. The level of discomfort a person experiences when threading their brows also depends on each individual person’s sensitivity and the area being threaded. For example, most people find the top of their eyebrow as being a lot less painful when being threaded than the bottom of their brow. How to lessen the pain When you’re having the under part of your brow threaded, your Ziba Beauty Artist will teach you how to use your fingers to hold your eyelid closed and skin stretched. The tighter you pull your skin, the lesser the pain of threading will be. AND the best reason of all – any discomfort or pain you feel the first time you get threaded, will start to lessen every time you get your brows done. It’s chemical free. No liquids or harsh substances are being applied to the skin. It’s fast – an experienced artist can take 7 – 10 mins. The results are longer-lasting. Shaping the brows is much easier and more precise than any other brow shaping technique. Threading can remove even the smallest hairs. The hair is being pulled straight from the follicle, so your skin stays in place. Threading can be performed on any parts of the face! AND the best reason of all – any discomfort or pain you feel the first time you get threaded, will start to lessen every time you get your brows done.

Perfect Eyebrows: The Brow Anatomy

Welcome to Eyebrow Science 101 where you will learn how to achieve perfect eyebrows as you dive into a deeper understanding of brow anatomy. Any beauty expert knows that your brows can do more for your face than almost any makeup product. With the correct brow shape and fill, you can change the perceived size of your eyes, contour your face and show off your best features. However, before any of that we need to get back to the basics – the Anatomy of An Eyebrow. Check out the chart below to get an A+ in Perfect Eyebrows! Now that we’ve learned the fundamentals, we can move onto the five basic brow shapes! While everyone’s face/ brow(s) shape is different, there are 5 basic brow shapes that we can identify, which can then have a bunch of variations to them. Each of the five shapes has the power to change the appearance of your other facial features, so it’s important to pick the right shape for the results you want. Keep reading to find out which shape provides the results you need! Flat Brows: These brows are perfect for anyone with a long face shape because the horizontal line creates the illusion of a shorter face that is also more oval-looking. Round Brows: The round shape is a must if you’re trying to create a softness to your face. It literally adds roundness to the face and helps to minimize sharp features, like a pointed chin or nose. Curved Brows: Believe it or not, curved brows are completely different from round ones! They’re the perfect shape for anyone who doesn’t want too much softness to their features and the shape works extremely well on square faces. Angled Brows: The high arch of an angled brow has the ability to create a more youthful appearance to the face and can make a round or diamond face shape appear slimmer (if that’s what you’re looking for). Soft Angled Brows: This is much like the above except it has a shorter arch and softer peak. The soft angle is key for a more feminine look and is a must-do for an oval face, in place of the regular angled brow which could make the face look perpetually surprised or angry. There you have it – the anatomy of an eyebrow and the five basic brow shapes. Knowing this information can change your brow game completely and help you achieve perfect eyebrows in no time. We hope you enjoyed learning more about your eyebrows and can’t wait to teach you more! Take Care, Ziba Beauty xo

The Top 3 Reasons You Should Thread VS. Wax Your Eyebrows

For years and years, the most readily available method of shaping eyebrows was waxing, which is why it was also the most popular. Now, as threading has become increasingly popular, it is also more easily found, so now the question becomes which is better – threading or waxing your eyebrows? Though both shaping methods can produce beautiful results, as a company who specializes in The Art of Threading, we decided to ask our brow experts and clients what their top 3 reasons are for choosing the ancient Art of Threading, as their go-to for brow shaping. #1 BEST BROW SHAPE The threading technique gives the Brow Artist complete control and precision of the hair-removal process. The Artist is able to remove a single hair, or line of hairs to achieve the best shape, no matter what the hair length. As seen here, the model’s brows are perfectly shaped with a clean, defined brow and softly arching shape that tapers naturally from the inside corner, to the tail of the brow. With the waxing technique, the Artist gives up some control of the process which is when the tell tale sign of waxing, the “hooked brow,” appears. As the Artist applies wax under the brow to clean and shape the arch, rather than a smooth even taper, the wax will spread when removed. This will create an inner corner that appears thick but transitions into an arch that looks dramatic and thin in comparison. Trying to avoid getting this hooked shape is not easy – Artists may wax the lid and then tweeze close to the brow to try to avoid the hook, but 9 times of out 10, the brow will definitely have a hooked effect. #2 LESS RISK TO SENSITIVE SKIN Threading is ideal for any type of skin, but especially for those with sensitive skin. Threading has little contact with the skin as the thread is gliding over the skin, rather than sticking to the skin. Waxing, however, coats the skin and hair, pulling both when the hair is removed. This “ripping” effect can cause sensitive skin to turn red and feel very tender. Another point to consider is that threading is 100% natural and uses a cotton string to remove hair, whereas even the most natural waxes can contain resins, preservatives, fragrances and ingredients that can cause sensitive skin to react negatively. #3 PREVENT PREMATURE SIGNS OF AGING The process of aging is beautiful, there’s no denying that and it happens to everyone. However, there are things that we do to our skin that can start the aging process earlier than it would otherwise start and regardless of whether or not it makes you look older, it usually isn’t very good for your skin. You guessed it, we’re talking about Eyebrow Waxing again. Waxing pulls the skin and the nature of wax removal can disrupt the delicate skin around the eyes and brows, especially if hot wax is being used. Though no scientific study exists, many people believe that repeated waxing can cause the skin to lose elasticity and may result in drooping lids, or fine lines around the eye area. When this happens, the shape of your face changes and in turn, so does the shape of your brows! Scientific proof or not, for the people who have waxed their brows and then moved to threading, the feel of the skin and brows is significantly better with threading. AND because the shape with threading is so precise, their brows remain natural and full, and their eyes appear more bright, open and youthful. Find these points helpful, or have a few more you’d like to share? We’d love to know! Take Care, Ziba Beauty xo

How-To Care For Your Eyebrows 101

So we’ve talked all about threading and the many benefits of threading your brows. We’ve even answered the most asked question by our new clients on the blog, “Does eyebrow threading hurt?” Today, we’re talking about how to take care of your brows, just like you would the rest of your body. The below steps are our essential eyebrow care tips that everyone should incorporate into their routine! #1 Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! If you don’t already moisturize your skin daily, we’re here to tell you that you’re doing your body a great injustice. Moisturizing is essential, especially for the face which is constantly exposed to the weather and air quality. No matter where you live, we recommend using a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 in it, to both keep your skin healthy and to protect it from the sun. Don’t be afraid to moisturize your brows either – the skin under them and around them also needs the TLC! Adding an SPF moisturizer to your daily routine will reduce your chances of premature aging, sun damage, fine lines and sagging skin – all of which can affect your eyebrow shape. #2 Condition those brow sisters We know it sounds odd but think about it this way… why do we use conditioner after shampooing our hair? Conditioner makes your hair smooth and restores its natural shine. It can also strengthen the hair to prevent breakage and hair loss. If you’re experiencing eyebrow hair-loss, chances are your brows might be in need of some serious conditioning. BUT you cannot use the same conditioner that you would use after shampooing – as this is not meant for your skin and can cause rashes and irritation. To condition your brows, we recommend using a Brow Conditioner in specific. While there are many options for purchase in stores, we believe that at-home brow conditioners work just as well, if not better than store bought ones and are a lot more affordable. Below are our recommendations based on what your brows need: To condition your brows: Use coconut oil To condition and grow your brows: Use castor oil You can also add Vitamin E oil to both the above, for an extra boost. Vitamin E oil helps blood circulation, in turn stimulating hair growth and is rich in antioxidants which helps with the conditioning factor! Use your oil of choice at least 3 times a week, on clean skin and brows (more if you need to grow your brows asap). To apply, use a clean disposable mascara brush or your fingers. #3 Maintain a regular threading schedule Life gets in the way sometimes and it can be hard to maintain an exact schedule for something like your brows. We still recommend trying to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible – which is something people tend not to do. When it comes to eyebrow threading, the technique is so great that it can be used when even the tiniest hairs start to show or when your brows are fully grown out. The problem with this, is that it becomes easy to neglect a regular schedule you can thread your brows no matter how long the growth is. The issue that arises is when you’ve achieved your optimum eyebrow shape – threading too soon or waiting too long can actually hurt the brows it’s taken you so long to perfect. If you wait too long, you can lose your shape completely and getting your brows back to the way you like them, may take both your Brow Artist and yourself a lot of time. Similarly, if you get your brows done too early, it’s easy to thin out the shape because you think all the little hairs need to be removed, which is not necessarily the case. Our recommendation: ask your Brow Artist to tell you what the best time frame is, for you to come back into your Ziba Studio and try to stick to within a week of that frame. For example, if your Ziba Brow Artist suggests a 4-week period between brow appointments, we recommend not going earlier than 3 weeks and later than 5 weeks. These essential eyebrow care tips can elevate your brow appearance and overall skin health immensely. They’re also really easy to implement and are tailor-made to fit into your lifestyle routine. Let us know if you try any of these out and if you have any recommendations of your own! Take Care, Ziba Beauty xo

What Determines Your Eyebrow Shape?

Sometimes what you want from your eyebrows isn’t something you can get. And that has very little to do with who is doing your eyebrows, using which technique and more to do with the characteristics of your eyebrows. Do you know the characteristics of your brows? In order to get your optimum eyebrow shape, you should be able to tell your Brow Artist what you want. Although they are experts in determining your brow design, it’s comforting to be able to recognize it yourself and know that you’re in good hands when you and your Ziba Artist come to the same conclusions. A single eyebrow can be broken down into 6 different elements which help determine where the best placement for each brow is, in order to keep the symmetry of the face. So what are the elements? #1 The Beginning Point This is based on the inner corner of your eye. You can assess where the beginning of your brow should be, by holding a ruler vertically at the inner corner of the eye. The beginning point of the eyebrow is the point at which the ruler intersects the line of the eyebrow. If you have a gap within the vertical line, this tells you where you need to let your hair grow back or, where you need to fill-in your brow. If the brow hair goes past the vertical line and towards the center of your forehead, that’s the hair you need to have removed during your next threading appointment. Simple, right? #2 The High Point The High Point of the eyebrow, also known as the Arch, is where the highest part of your brow is. Sometimes however, due to eyebrow mishaps, our natural arch has been removed or messed with and therefore it can be difficult to place where the High Point is. A good way to recognize the High Point is by looking straight ahead and holding a ruler at the outside of your nostril, diagonally to where it crosses the outer edge of your Iris (see image below). The place where the ruler intersects the top of the eyebrow, is where your High Point should be – if it isn’t, you know what you and your Brow Artist need to work on! P.S. This does not mean your brow has to have a sharp arch or angle – this point tells you the maximum natural height your brow can achieve. #3 The End Point The ending point of your brow is important in keeping the balance of your face and rarely needs to be changed. To check on your end point, all you have to do is hold a ruler diagonally from the side of your nose to the outer corner of your eye and let it extend towards the eyebrow. The place where the ruler intersects the brow, is the end point of your brow. Knowing this point is important because it prevents the removal of any hair that can shorten your brow and affect the natural symmetry of your face. #4 The Arched or Round Brow Knowing the shape of your face is only ever a plus when it comes to your brows – if you’re not sure about your shape, ask your Ziba Brow Artist! They’ve been expertly trained to help you assess your face shape. Once you know your face shape, you can easily figure out what brow shape compliments your face the best. For example, a sharp, angular face shape calls for a more rounded brow to balance out all the facial elements and soften some of your features. Vice versa, a round or oval face shape works best with a sharper, arched brow to bring back dimension to the face. #5 The Eyebrow Length The optimum length of your eyebrow comes from two of the characteristic we discussed above! Measure the distance from The Beginning Point to The End Point you identified and the distance is the ideal length of your eyebrow. This measurement is the easiest to check if you’re ever feeling like your eyebrows look “off” and can help to avoid having a brow that’s too long or too short. #6 The Open or Closed End Point To determine if the end of your brow is open or closed, hold a ruler horizontally from the bottom of the beginning point and straight out. If the end of your eyebrow is above the horizontal line, then you have an open ended point. An open ended point gives the illusion of lengthening to the middle part of the face and lifts the top part of the face – which round face shapes will benefit from. If the end of the eyebrow is touching the imaginary horizontal line (ruler) then you have a closed end point. This point does not create any illusions and is the most common ending type! Those are the 6 elements contributing to your eyebrow shape and style! If you’re not sure about any of the elements or want to check you’ve made the right assessments – just ask your Ziba Brow Artist! Also, knowing these elements can help anyone who has trouble filling-in their brows significantly because you now know all the points and ends of your ideal brow!! Ziba Beauty also provides a service that can help you understand everything from your face shape to your brow shape called The Brow Fit! Ask one of our friendly front-desk staff about it the next time you’re checking into your Ziba Studio 🙂 Take Care, Ziba Beauty x

Does Eyebrow Threading Hurt?

If you’re asking this question, chances are that you’re a newbie to eyebrow threading – but fear not – we’re going to break it all down for you. Eyebrow threading is an ancient indian hair removal technique that we, at Ziba Beauty, swear by and all that’s involved is a piece of cotton thread! The thread is twisted around the Brow Artist’s fingers and pulled along areas of unwanted hair in order to grab the brow hairs directly from the root of the follicle. It’s completely natural and chemical-free, which is always a plus when it comes to your skin. So does it hurt? Yes and no. With any hair-removal technique there is always going to be some discomfort, threading however, is the least painful. This is because the hair is being removed from the root whereas with brow waxing, you’re feeling the pain of hair being pulled out plus the added pain of the skin being tugged on and the use of a sticky wax on sensitive parts of your skin, which doesn’t help. If you’ve ever tweezed your brows (it’s okay we’ve all been guilty of this at some point), you can think about the feeling of threading as being similar to plucking 5 hairs at once. It can kind of hurt but it also subsides just as quickly. Discomfort also depends on each individual person’s sensitivity and the area being threaded. For example, people find the top of their eyebrow being threaded, a lot less painful than the bottom of their brow. Luckily, there is a way to lessen the pain! When you’re having the under part of your brow threaded, your Brow Artist will show you how to hold your eyelid closed and stretch your skin with your fingers – a quick tip we have is to hold your skin tightly because the tighter your pull, the lesser the pain of threading is. So why do peoples’ eyes water if it doesn’t hurt that much? Our bodies have natural reactions already stored in us for certain situations. So if you’ve ever seen someone tearing up during their service, it’s less likely that it’s due to pain and more likely that the body is reacting to the sensitive skin areas being threaded. People who don’t feel any pain while getting their eyebrows threaded have also been known to tear up – it’s just the body’s way of telling you that something’s up and to be aware of it. If it hurts even a little bit, why do people still choose to get threaded? This is a great question and the best answer is RESULTS. People continue to get their brows and other facial hair threaded because the results they see, far outweigh any pain they might bear. The benefits of threading over other hair-removal techniques are tenfold and can be summed up with these key points: It’s chemical free. No liquids or harsh substances are being applied to the skin. It’s fast – an experienced artist can take 7 – 10 mins. The results are longer-lasting. Shaping the brows is much easier and more precise than any other brow shaping technique. Threading can remove even the smallest hairs, whereas with waxing you have to wait until the hair grows a certain length in order to have it removed. The skin isn’t being tugged and stretched by a wax and this can help avoid premature wrinkles and any scarring. The hair is being pulled straight from the follicle, so your skin stays in place. Threading can be performed on any parts of the face! AND the best reason of all – any discomfort or pain you feel the first time you get threaded, will start to lessen every time you get your brows done at Ziba. You will naturally get used to the feeling of threading and some people even enjoy it because it can feel like a massage. Furthermore, even within a single threading session, the pain you feel will decrease as your brow artist works their magic because your body simply gets used to the feeling. Still a little nervous? Don’t be! The Ziba Brow Artists are professionals who are expertly trained and have been certified to take care of your brows. We encourage you to let your artist know if you’re feeling nervous about getting your brows threaded and rest assured, they’ll do everything they can to make it as comfortable as possible for you. Wait, there’s more; if you’re still unsure or have a friend or teenager at home who wants to get their brows done but is scared it’ll hurt – we have a service catered just to you and them called: The Virgin Brow. The Virgin Brow is meant for first time eyebrow shapers and is a consultative and transformational service. It begins with a thorough consultation, including facial measurements and concludes with Ziba’s Signature Finish. The package includes 3 Brow Appointments which is perfect for nervous first-timers because it allows the Brow Artist to take the extra time to explain threading to the client. In addition, the client has 3 services to get used to the feeling of threading; so for example, the first service could be focused on the top of the brow and the second service, the bottom. By the time the client gets to the last service, they will be far more comfortable than they were and have had the time: to get used to the feeling, to get to know their brow artist AND to figure out what their ideal brow shape is and how long it takes for their eyebrow hair to grow between sessions. For $49 it’s a win win win situation – all you have to do is call your local Ziba Studio to make an appointment! If you want to see threading performed in-person before making an appointment, you are more than welcome to join us at any of our Studios. We can also help you talk to other customers about their brow experiences. Of course, our staff and artists will

Eyebrow Threading or Waxing? Ziba Beauty Glendale Galleria Answers!

What’s the best method for shaping your eyebrows? Ziba Beauty Glendale Galleria answers this key question for you. For years, the most available method of shaping eyebrows was waxing.  As threading has become a more easily found option, the question is, which is better – eyebrow threading or waxing? Though both shaping methods can produce beautiful results, as a company who specializes in The Art of Threading, here’s what our brow experts and clients are saying their top 3 reasons are for choosing the ancient hair removal technique of The Art of Threading, as their top choice. 1.  Best Brow Shape Threading gives the Brow Artist complete control and precision. The Artist is able to remove a single hair, or line of hairs to achieve the best shape. As seen here, the model’s brows are perfectly shaped with a clean, defined brow and soft, arching shape that tapers naturally from the inside corner to the tail of the brow. With waxing, the Artist gives up some control and very often, a tell tale sign of waxing is a “hooked brow”. As the Artist smoothes wax under the brow to clean and shape the arch, rather than a smooth even taper, the wax will spread. When removed, the wax will create an inner corner that appears thick that transitions into an arch that looks dramatic and thin.  To try to avoid this hooked shape, Artists may wax the lid and then tweeze close to the brow, but 9 times of out 10 the shape will definitely have a hooked effect. 2.  Less Skin Reaction Threading is ideal for sensitive skin. Threading has little contact with the skin as the thread is gliding over the skin. Waxing however coats the skin and hair, pulling both, when the hair is removed.  This “ripping” effect can cause sensitive skin to turn red and feel very tender.  Another point to consider is that threading uses a cotton string to remove hair, whereas even the most natural waxes can contain resins, preservatives, fragrances and ingredients that can cause sensitive skin to react. 3. Accelerated Signs Of Aging Waxing pulls the skin and the nature of wax removal can disrupt the delicate skin around the eyes and brows.  Though no scientific study exists, many people believe that repeated waxing can cause the skin to lose elasticity and may result in drooping lids, or a more aged looking eye area, before its time.  Scientific proof or not, for the women who have waxed and then moved to threading, they feel the skin of the lids and brows is in better condition with threading than with waxing.  AND because the shape with threading is so precise, their brows appear natural and full and their eyes, even brighter, open and youthful. Did you find these points helpful, or have a few more you’d like to share? We’d love to know! Visit the Ziba Beauty Studio at Glendale Galleria for your eyebrow threading, body waxing and henna needs, with our expert beauty artists. How to Style Your Brows

For many of us, styling and accessorizing is a lot of fun. We do it everyday when we get dressed, fix our hair and/or brighten up the house with fresh flowers, new throw pillows or coffee table books. However something you might be missing – or underemphasizing – is perhaps the most important of all – your eyebrows! Making sure that your brow style is on point, both punctuates your look and starts your day off right. Eyebrows frame the most important feature on your face and enhance your overall facial structure. There are 2 simple steps to beautiful brows: Shape and Finish. Shape The artistry of gorgeous brows comes down to good ol’ geometry. Shaping your brows is all about assessing angles and the placement of your facial features and contours – which means your perfect brow shape is special to YOU and YOUR pretty face. This is why the help of a professional Brow Artist is key to getting your brows in shape. It’s easier, fool-proof and far safer than the dreaded tweezer. So how do you get beautiful brows designed specially for you? Two ways: Threading Threading is a clean and chemical-free hair removal technique that uses thread (not exactly the kind you sew with but similar) to remove hair. Thread is wrapped around the hair and pulls it out directly from the follicle. It’s a highly specialized and effective treatment that is extremely precise, gentle on the skin and only takes 5-10 minutes. Unlike waxing, which requires the hair to be a certain length, threading can remove very short and fine hairs without breakage. Waxing Similar to threading, waxing pulls hair directly from the root. If you prefer waxing, choose a natural recipe that is equally effective and less irritating, like Ziba’s. With this service, the wax is smeared on top of the skin, then hardens around the hairs and is swiftly lifted to remove the hair. Finish Similar to the way mascara finishes your eye makeup, brow makeup finishes the eyebrow. Brow crayons, pencils, pomades and highlighters are great for filling in and enhancing what nature gave you. They can also extend the life of your shaping treatment! Before you finish your brows, take a minute to understand your options. Flip through any magazine or scroll through Instagram and you’ll spot (and probably covet) the bold brows on friends, celebs, and influencers. Full brows are in and the trend seems here to stay, so embrace it! Luckily almost anyone CAN achieve a bold brow. Here are 3 ways to achieve the look: Bold and Angular This styling technique is all about accentuating your brow arch. Create a crisp, solid line along the base of the brow with a brow crayon and blend with a brow pomade working from the bottom up to the top. Finally, fill in any patchy areas of brow with a brow crayon. Use a highlighter above and below the brow line to really define the brow. Feathered This is a natural look with a focus on texture. First, fill your brows in with a true match brow crayon. Then, using a brow crayon that is one shade darker than the crown, flick upward through the brow creating the look of little hairs, especially at the inner brow. Natural For this brow style, the goal is to create a fluid perimeter with less emphasis on crisp lines. Play up the shape of your brow with volume and color using a brow crayon and pomade. Your best accessories are the brows you are born with. Style them right and walk out the door with confidence.
